Eat Clean By Snacking Clean

This is our favorite health tip to give people: Snack and snack a lot. We like it so much because it is something everyone already likes to do and it is good for you. You need to snack. Eating a little something throughout the day is very good for you.
The key is to make the snack healthy. Here's why:

  • Healthy snacks help you keep your weight in check. It does this by enabling your body to avoid extreme hunger, which sends your brain into panic mode and your hand into a box of donuts. Snacking regularly and warding off hunger also helps you control how much you eat at your meals.
  • Snacking regularly allows your body to better regulate your blood sugar and metabolism, which also prevents your body from storing energy as fat.
  • Nutrient-rich snacks boost energy, mood, and brain activity.
  • Small snacks allow the body to get those additional nutrients that it needs. Three meals a day rarely contain all of the vitamins that are necessary for optimal health, so snacks allow you to pack those in throughout the day with veggies and fruit.

There is a difference between snacking and healthy snacking, though. Snacking is eating food that doesn't provide any real value to the body. Healthy snacking is eating food when the body needs it and eating the foods that will benefit the body most. The best way to do the latter is to be prepared. This means not arriving at the office empty handed. That is exactly how you end up in the conference room at 3 p.m. grabbing those three bags of potato chips. Instead, shop for healthy snacks like apples, bananas, and oranges. You can also make snacks at home and bring them with you (think cut up celery and carrots with a container of hummus).
